Courtyard Garden

Created for a couple who like to entertain, this design incorporates a generous patio subtly split by a water rill to provide two distinct entertainment areas; the smaller space on the left is ideal for the couple to relax, whilst the larger area on the right comfortably accommodates a table for up to 10 people. Both areas benefit from a view to the copper water feature with spouts selected to create a sonorous splashing, whilst the green tiled centre enhances the play of light across the surface.

Creating clear sight lines from the house to maximise enjoyment of the water features and planting is another key element of this design. Trees have been chosen to frame the views, create a sense of seclusion, and to provide a link to the parkland beyond.

A wide gravelled area leading to the entrance not only provides easy access, but has been designed for pottering outside - a place where the couple can plant up their pots and enjoy picking herbs. The final seating area is tucked into a corner; an intimate space to soak up the afternoon sunshine or to enjoy the scent of the Mediterranean herbs in the evening.

Informal herbaceous planting envelops the seating areas, with delicate grasses, spires of flowers and pleasing mounds of foliage. A soft colour palette of green, glaucous, purple, and golden foliage complement the existing aged red-brick walls of the boundary. Planting is more uniformly green in the shadiest areas, with white and purple flowers to add sparkle throughout.
